Title: Trapped-ion Applications and Quantum Operations

Abstract: Trapped ions are an extremely versatile quantum system, leading the way in realizing scalable quantum computers, simulating an ever growing array of quantum phenomena, and forming the nodes of local and long-distance photonic quantum networks.
In this talk I will present recent results from experiments at JQI on a chain of trapped Ytterbium ions with individual Raman beam addressing and individual readout [1]. This system can be configured to run any sequence of single- and two-qubit gates, making it in effect an arbitrarily programmable quantum computer with all-to-all connectivity. We recently added a classical optimization layer, creating a quantum-classical hybrid computer to demonstrate generative modelling. This machine learning task is expected to be one of the techniques most suited to take advantage of the additional resources provided by near-term quantum computers [2].
I will also show how this experimental setup can be adapted to simulate new and unusual physical systems, such as para-particle dynamics and the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model [3]. Finally, a new project to achieve a city-scale quantum network using single near-telecom photons generated by single Strontium ions will be presented.
