Taking the Quantum out of the laboratory: A bottom-up synthesis of scalable quantum
Quantum approaches to computing, sensing, or communications have long promised transformative
advances beyond their classical counterparts. Laboratory-scale conceptual demonstrations of such capabilities abound - from optical clocks that err by fractions of a second over the lifetime of the Universe to ultracold atom interferometers with sensitivities beyond the standard quantum limit. However, when held to a more stringent standard of technology readiness, examples of such transformative concepts that truly harness quantum effects are few and far between. To make matters worse, assessments of timescales of development and potential utility of such disruptive concepts remain wildly disparate.
