Title: Searching for new physics in jets at the LHC
Abstract: New particles beyond the Standard Model might be produced with a very high boost, for instance if they result from the decay of a heavier particle. If the former decay hadronically, then their signature is a single massive fat jet which is difficult to separate from QCD backgrounds. However, in recent years jet substructure and machine learning techniques have been demonstrated to be able to extract information that is useful for discriminating different kinds of jets. In this talk I will begin with a brief review of the state of the art in LHC searches for new physics in jets and of new physics models which might manifest in this way. There remain gaps in the LHC search program, and the main part of my talk will illustrate how these gaps might be filled either by dedicated taggers designed to isolate specific jet substructures, or by generic taggers designed to reject most QCD jets while having broad sensitivity to jets resulting from a range of BSM boosted particles in as model-agnostic a way as possible. This would allow to search for new particles with various decay topologies as bumps in otherwise featureless jet mass distributions.
