I’m currently majoring in another discipline. How can I add a double major in Physics?
To declare a double major in Physics, students should schedule an appointment with one of our advisors to discuss the major requirements and their plan for graduation. Students should bring a copy of their current four-year plan. After the meeting, students should complete a Declaration of Major form and return this form to the CMNS Student Services Office in 1300 Symons Hall.
What is the difference between a double major and a double degree?
Students who complete a double major receive one diploma (in their primary major). To complete a double major, students must earn 120 total credits, the same number of credits as required for a single major.
Students who complete a double degree receive two diplomas. To complete a double degree, students must earn 150 total credits, and one degree must have at least 18 unique credits that do not overlap with the requirements of the second degree.
How do I get involved in research in the Physics Department?
Students who are interested in participating in physics research are encouraged to contact physics faculty to learn more about their work. For more information, contact the Physics advisors.
Can I get credit for the research I'm doing with a Physics professor?
Yes! Students who have plans to do to research with a Physics professor for the upcoming semester should download a copy of the Independent Study Contract from our Undergraduate Forms page and complete the form with their mentor. Please note that independent study courses should be added no later than the end of the schedule adjustment period each term.
How can I add a Physics minor?
To add a Physics minor, schedule an appointment with one of our advisors to discuss the minor requirements. After the meeting, complete a Declaration of Minor form and return it to the Physics Student and Education Services Office in 1309 Toll Physics Building. Please note that no more than 7 credits in the Physics minor can count towards a student’s major requirements.
Can I take physics courses over the winter and/or summer terms?
The Physics Department typically does not offer courses that count for major requirements over the winter term. The Department offers a variety of courses over the summer term, but typically not those that count towards the Physics major. For a listing of courses available for the most recent/upcoming winter and summer terms, visit our Schedule of Classes.
