Trapped atomic ions are an ideal platform for the quantum simulation of interesting spin models, shedding light on nontrivial ground states of magnetic order, the dynamics of quantum magnetism, and the onset of quantum phase transitions. Recent experiments have been performed along these lines with several atoms, and this system holds great promise in scaling to many more atomic spins in a regime where classical simulation becomes intractable.
