Physics alum Leo Singer was awarded the 2014 GWIC Thesis Prize, which recognizes outstanding Ph.D. theses in the general area of gravitational waves.

Singer, who received his B.S., in physics, from UMD, was selected for his Ph.D. thesis “The needle in the 100 deg2 haystack: The hunt for binary neutron star mergers with LIGO and Palomar Transient Factory.” The thesis addresses the most challenging problem of joint observation of BNS coalescence events by gravitational wave and electromagnetic detectors.

Singer received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 2014.

Gretchen Campbell has recently been announced as the IUPAP 2015 Young Scientist Prize recipient in the field of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. The organization cited her "outstanding contributions in toroidal Bose-Einstein condensates and its application to "atomtronic" circuits."

Researchers from the University of Maryland have described a new definition of chaos that applies more broadly than previous definitions. This new definition is compact, can be easily approximated by numerical methods and works for a wide variety of chaotic systems. The discovery could one day help advance computer modeling across a wide variety of disciplines, from medicine to meteorology and beyond.
