Graduate Catalog: An Academic Guide
The Graduate Catalog is maintained by the Graduate School and contains descriptions of graduate degree programs and their course offerings, university procedures for admission, registration, graduation, and a listing of graduate faculty and university policies and procedures.
Graduate School Writing Resources
The Graduate School has a web page of tips and strategies for handling basic writing issues and tools for tackling writing/editing issues in specific disciplines. Technical aspects of grammar and spelling are addressed, as well as dealing with challenges such as writer’s block.

Teaching & Learning Transformation Center (TLTC)
The TLTC inspires and supports effective, engaging, efficient, and equitable teaching innovations among the University’s instructors and assistants. Our team provides faculty, students, and staff with training, resources, professional development activities, and individualized consultation to transform their classrooms and careers.

Parking
Campus parking is managed by the Department of Transportation Services (DOTS). Students can purchase permits by the semester via their website. For students who aren’t interested in a regular parking pass, there are some limited meter, hourly parking, and special passes available.
Student Life & Community
Graduate Student Government
The GSG has three primary functions: advocating on behalf of graduate students at the University of Maryland, funding social events intended to create a vibrant graduate student community, and fostering and celebrating excellence in graduate student research.
Graduate Student Legal Aid
Graduate Student Legal Aid is a free service for graduate students provided through the Graduate Student Government. The office can’t represent you in court, but it does offer a broad spectrum of legal assistance and information.
The Memorial Chapel
The University has approved chaplains representing 14 faith communities. The Memorial Chapel offers programming designed to help students tap into their spirituality to address life issues and find more balance in day-to-day living in addition to exploring different religious faiths. Many of the chaplains have offices located in Memorial Chapel.
Off-Campus Housing Services (OCH)
The Off-Campus Housing Services Office in the Stamp Student Union provides a wide range of print and online services to assist you with your housing search. Resources include the OCH Database, a searchable database of available rental properties and a space to post your roommate profile and search for potential roommates.

Office of International Affairs (OIA)
OIA’s mission is to enhance the international activities and character of UMD, by acting as the interface for students and faculty going abroad/coming to College Park; encouraging, assisting, and coordinating the international components of UMD academic units, programs, and initiatives; and organizing programming to internationalize the outlook of UMD students, faculty, and staff, to ultimately bring the resources of UMD to the world. OIA includes the following units: International Student & Scholar Services, Education Abroad, Confucius Institute, Maryland China Initiative.

International Student Repatriation Services
The University of Maryland offers a group insurance policy which provides emergency medical evacuation and repatriation insurance as required for J-1 visa holders. It is recommended that all other visa holders carry this insurance. Coverage provides emergency medical evacuation up to $25,000 or repatriation of mortal remains up to $10,000.

Office of the Bursar
The Bursar’s office is your resource center for checking your balance, paying your bills, receiving refunds, making payments and more.
Emergency Loans
If you are in a bind, you can get emergency money from the Graduate School to help out. Depending on the situation, you can receive up to $500 in an interest-free loan that must be repaid in 60 days.

Income Tax Form Assistance
Every year during March and April, the Graduate School brings a tax consultant onto campus to provide free tax form assistance for graduate students. The service is open to all graduate students, but it is recommended that international students use OIS’s online tax help services (https://globalmaryland.umd.edu/offices/international-students-scholar-services/frequently-asked-questions-about-taxes) due to their special needs.
Health & Mental Health
UMD Health Center
The University Health Center (UHC) is staffed by physicians, physician assistants, and registered nurse practitioners. Services to all registered students include: urgent care, a walk-in clinic, x-ray and laboratory services, a pharmacy, an allergy clinic, HIV testing, international travel clinic, physical therapy, women’s health services, orthopedics, immunizations, health education, massage therapy, acupuncture, substance abuse programs and counseling, and mental health services.
Campus Recreation Services (CRS)
CRS offers a wide variety of services for fitness, health and wellness, including: group fitness programs, personal training, a campus bike shop, climbing wall, basketball courts, a sauna/steam room, etc.
Health Insurance
Graduate assistants are provided health insurance through the university employee health program; details of available plans and benefits are available at the University’s Human Resources Benefits website. Graduate students without an assistantship may purchase a plan through the University-sponsored health insurance program with UnitedHealthcare.
The Counseling Center
Individual, group, and couples counseling/psychotherapy; help for both personal/social issues and educational/vocational concerns; crisis management; consultation and outreach; psychology, personality, and career interest testing; off-campus referrals
Diversity Resources & Outreach Programs
Physics Lecture Demonstration Facility
The Lecture Demonstration Facility at the University of Maryland is designed to help faculty spark student interest, identify misconceptions, help students make predictions, facilitate discussion, and reinforce curricular concepts. In addition to classroom integration, the Lecture Demonstration Facility is home to public outreach programs and partnerships. The most famous of these, Physics is Phun, has a long history of making physics accessible to the community.
Physics Outreach
The Physics Department at UMD actively seeks to engage the greater Washington, DC/Maryland community through a variety of outreach programs. With help from our faculty, staff, and world-class lecture demonstration facility, our programs bring education and entertainment to a wide array of audiences.
LGBT Equity Office
The Office of LGBT Equity is a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs and reports to the Associate Provost for Diversity and Equity. It is an institutional member of the National Consortium of Directors of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Resources in Higher Education.
Rainbow Walk-In Hours at the Counseling Center
The Counseling Center’s Rainbow Walk-In Hour is a program designed specifically for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered (LGBT) students or students from LGBT headed families.

Office of Diversity and Inclusion
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion provides active oversight, coordination, and evaluation of the University of Maryland’s equity, diversity, and inclusion activities; manages and tracks implementation of the Strategic Plan for Diversity; and encourages and supports the efforts of units to achieve their diversity goals.
Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education (OMSE)
The mission of OMSE is to serve undergraduate multi-ethnic students to increase rates of matriculation, retention, graduation, and overall GPA.
Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy (MICA)
MICA empowers students through education on issues of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, and their intersections. In support of UMD’s commitment to diversity, multiculturalism, and social justice, MICA advances a purposeful campus climate that capitalizes on the educational benefits of diversity, through student-centered advising, advocacy, programs, research, and practices.

Request the key from the Information Desk in the main lobby near the Stamp front entrance.

School of Public Health, Room 1232
The facilities coordinator in the dean’s office (room 2242) grants card swipe access for students, faculty, and staff or opens the room for visitors.
McKeldin Library, Room 4235
Keys are lent on a monthly basis after completing a reservation form.
Clark School of Engineering, 1131 Martin Hall
Request use of this small conference room from staff. This space is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Behavioral and Social Sciences, Tydings Hall (042), Room 4124
Space does not need to be reserved. In the instance the space is needed for an extended period of time, please contact your respective department for card access.
Business School Lactation Rooms
A dedicated lactation room is currently being designed for the Smith School in Van Munching Hall and will be available in 2014. Until then, Smith School faculty, staff, or students who need access to a lactation room should contact their departmental coordinator or supervisor to arrange use of a private room. Visitors to Van Munching Hall should contact Lee Comstock at 301.405.2189.
Changing Stations on Campus
The stations tend to be in buildings that are newly constructed or recently renovated.
Stamp Student Union
Changing stations are available in both men’s and women’s bathrooms on the ground floor next to the Chevy Chase Bank.
Campus Recreation Services
The CRS have a private family dressing room (includes changing station) and is located on the pool level next to the men’s locker room.
Van Munching Hall
The UMD Business School in Van Munching Hall has changing stations in both men’s and women’s bathrooms on the first floor of its new wing.
Health Center
Changing stations available in both men’s and women’s bathrooms.
Family Care Resource and Referral Service
This new service was created to assist University of Maryland faculty, staff, and students with their family care needs and concerns. The university has contracted with Family Care Resources (FCR), an experienced consulting company, to provide free consultations and seminars to ease the stress of finding child care and elder care resources.
The Center for Healthy Families
The Center for Healthy Families is the couple and family therapy clinic housed in the Department of Family Science. The Center provides family therapy to residents of surrounding communities, training for the Department’s clinical graduate students, and a site for clinical research.
The Center for Young Children
The Center for Young Children is an early childhood development center dedicated to providing an exemplary early childhood program and committed to fostering the continued growth and development of each child on a cognitive, physical, emotional, and social level.
