A Workshop in Honor of the Life and Work of Richard Prange

"Quantum Correlated Matter and Chaos: A workshop in Honor of the Life and Work of Richard Prange" brought together researchers from all over the world, including China, Japan, India, the United States, Israel, Colombia, Brazil and many European countries. Steven Anlage was a scientific Coordinator of the five day workshop which explored areas of overlap in emerging problems in nonlinear dynamics, condensed matter and atomic physics. This combination was inspired by the work of the late Richard Prange, as exchanging ideas between these fields resulted in substantial progress in the past.

The interdisciplinary workshop covered topics including quantum/wave chaos, correlated materials, topological states of matter, Majorana Fermions, Anderson localization, quantum phase transitions, random matrix theory, nonlinear dynamics, mesoscopic physics and econophysics. In addition to Anlage, UMD's Sankar Das Sarma, Victor Galitski and Victor Yakovenko were among the scientific leaders in attendance. A special talk entitled "Richard Prange and his Physics" was delivered by Das Sarma.

Faculty Promotions Announced by CMNS

The College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (CMNS) has announced the promotion of 10 faculty members, effective July 1, 2015. Among the faculty being promoted to Full Professor are kara Hoffman and Johnpierre Paglione.

Kara Hoffman joined the Department of Physics in 2004. Her research interests include particle astrophysics, with research projects at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole and the Askaryan Radio Array.

Johnpierre Paglione joined the Department of Physics in 2008. His research interests include strongly correlated electron systems, synthesis and exploration of SCES materials and anisotropy in quantum materials.
