Title : PREFACE: A proposed new CMS subsystem for a Long-Lived Particle search in the very forward direction

Speaker Name: Michael Albrow
Speaker Institution : Fermilab

Abstract : A new Long-Lived Particle search called FACET (Forward-Aperture CMS ExTension) was proposed in 2022 to search for new particles able to penetrate 50 m of iron and decay to standard model particles in an 18 m long 1 m diameter vacuum pipe. The LHC would not consider such a change to the beam pipe before Run 5, expected in 2036. A modified layout called PREFACE that does not require any change to the LHC and so could begin operation in HL-LHC (Run 4) will be described. The acceptance in the mass:coupling plane is similar to that for FACET, with larger polar angle coverage. Backgrounds from interactions are greatly reduced by shielding and use of AI in the trigger to reject track vertices on materials. A new scalar (light higgs) decaying to c-cbar, b-bbar or tau+tau should be background-free. An option PREFACE_nu to measure neutrino interactions will be described.
